This place was ridiculous. Of course Tony Stark would build a building as big as his ego and just as elaborate. Stop by and I’ll show you what I’m working on, he’d said, but he hadn’t said which floor out of the million and one this building had that he would be hiding on.
As was Clint’s way he decided to take the elevator the whole way to the top and work his way down, or maybe just explore the place and see how the other half lived. Okay, so he’d seen plenty of that on missions, and this was more a case of seeing how the 1% lived than any half. Tony Stark was much too rich for any half.
When the lift reached the top floor, Clint barely waited for the doors to open before he started to step out, but at the same time there was someone waiting to step in and he jumped back, barely biting back a yelp.

The top floor was typically where you found Tony if you were looking for him. This was also a private area, very private. Only certain people were supposed to be in this area of the building - invited. Pepper was surprised to find the elevator doors opening up to a man she did not know.
She was just about to head out herself. It was why she was standing in front of the elevator to begin with, but she realized the elevator was already on its way up. She had assumed it was Tony or someone else that had been invited up by her longtime boss. This man though...he was a complete and utter stranger to her.
Her arms crossed over her chest as she eyed the man. "This is a private area. You can only gain access by invitation." She thought second of it and reached for her phone to call security. It was always better to be safe than sorry. For all she knew this man could be out to try and get information about Stark Industries.

Once he had gotten over the surprise, Clint offered the cute but uninviting woman a smile. She didn’t return it. Following her words he watched her reach into her jacket and acted on instinct and years of training. Shooting one arm out he blocked the elevator door from closing and grabbed her wrist. In one fluid movement he was out of the lift, had her turned around with her back pressed against his front, and had effectively immobilized her from drawing her... phone? Applying a little pressure to her wrist to make her drop the item, Clint’s eyes widened when he realised it was a phone, not a gun, that she had been reaching for.
“Oh.” He quickly released her and stepped back, holding his hands up in a gesture of surrender. “I... I have an invitation?” he offered sheepishly.
((I hope that's not too much godmodding. I figured with his training he could get the jump on her before she could react, but I can edit if it's too much. ))

((LOL! It's perfectly fine!))
This was one of those moments where Pepper had no idea what had just happened. All she knew was that this guy had grabbed her in one easy movement and had her pinned against him while making her drop her phone from her hand. She gasped with surprise and worry. All she could think was this man was going to kill her.
Suddenly, she was released and stumbled forward. Her hand landed on the wall next to her to keep her from falling flat on her face. Turning slowly, she eyed the man with a look of worry and speculation. "Who are you and what do you want?" It was obvious that she thought he was someone after Tony and his suit. She didn't believe he had or would ever get an invitation.

The woman clearly believed he was up to no good and didn’t trust him as far as she could throw him, but considering he had just assaulted her Clint couldn’t really blame her.
“I work with Tony, part of the...” he started to explain before cutting off. Should he be admitting to this woman that he was an Avenger? Did she know about them already? He couldn’t take the chance. “He’s working on something fo me and asked me to stop by. My name is Clint Barton, you can call him and check.”
Remember that she actually couldn’t call and check because he had knocked her phone right out of her hand, he slowly crouched to the floor to retrieve it, never taking his eyes off of her.

Pepper was very skeptical. Her blue eyes narrowed as the man spoke of having an invitation, and he told her he could call to check. Her gaze followed the same point on the floor as his did. "I was about to call someone, but you knocked my phone out of my hand!"
Her eyes never left him either as he crouched for her phone. When he lifted it to her, she quickly reached out and snatched it out of his hand with an attitude. Dialing Tony's number, she brought the phone to her ear and waited for him to answer.
"There's a man here that practically assaulted me by the name of Clint Barton. He says you gave him clearance up here to speak to him." After a moment she ended the call. "He says you are part of the Avengers Initiative, but you better not touch me again. Why didn't you tell me you were an Avenger?" It could have gone a lot differently.

Clint inwardly winced when she raised her voice. “Sorry, I thought you were grabbing for a... weapon,” he replied lamely, pulling his hand back when she snatched the phone from it.
For a moment he could do nothing but stand there awkwardly while she cleared everything up, though he certainly could have done without her telling Tony that he had ‘assaulted’ her, whether it was ‘practically’ or not. He had the feeling he was going to hear about that later.
When the call was over, Clint was a bit surprised and more relieved that this woman knew about the Avengers.
“I wasn’t sure if you knew anything about it,” he said, still standing pretty much stock still even though he was pretty sure she wasn’t going to call security on him or attack him. If she knew about the Avengers Initiative then she most likely knew about SHIELD too. “I’m used to working for a covert organization, so telling a stranger that I’ve started playing superhero with some merry band of misfits isn’t really my first instinct.”

Pepper shook her head. "It was a phone." Even still, now that she knew he was an Avenger she kind of understood why he was so quick to assume she was carrying a weapon. It still made her all uneasy around Clint now.
"Of course I do. I helped come up with this building," she gestured around them. "I completely understand that. I really do. Tony, well, Tony is different. He likes to shock everyone and tell them he's Iron Man. Anyway, I'm Pepper Potts. Tony's personal assistant and other things." She thought if she introduced herself maybe that would make more sense to Clint. Tony did talk about her to others, right? She hoped so.
"So, what exactly did Tony send you up here for? Is there some specific reason?" And she was wondering why Tony had sent him up there alone.

“I see that now,” Clint replied, barely keeping the sarcasm out of his voice. It wouldn’t do well to further upset the lady, after all. He was already in deep enough trouble... or so he had thought.
“Pepper Potts?” he repeated. Oh, great. Not only had he assaulted he head of Tony’s company or whatever she was now, but the billionaire’s girlfriend as well. That was just awesome. Stark was going to be less than happy with him and will probably never let him forget it. Great. “I’m really sorry,” he said. Way to get off on the right foot with his new team, as if he hadn’t already started out bad enough with the whole ‘possessed and plotting to kill them’ thing.
“Yeah, he was working on some new trick arrows for me, said he had some great ideas,” Clint jumped on the subject, rubbing the back of his neck awkwardly.

Pepper ignored the sarcasm. She was being sarcastic herself when she reiterated that it was a phone he knocked out of her hand. At this moment she was wishing Tony was here because things seemed a bit tense and awkward after their initial meeting.
She finally shrugged. "It happened. I think it's safe to say it was an accident, for the most part, so maybe we should start over. I'm Pepper Potts." This time she extended her hand to be courteous and polite to Clint. If he was a part of the Avengers it wouldn't do any of them any good if they couldn't stand one another.
"Sounds like something he would be good at," she said and stepped away, heading over to the bar that Tony had made just for him. "Would you care for a drink, Mr. Barton?"

Clint breathed out a sigh of relief and smiled when Pepper suggested starting over. He took her hand
“A pleasure to meet you, Miss Potts,” he said, now all charm and courtesy. “I’m Clint Barton, also known as Hawkeye. Though if Tony has mentioned me it might have been under the name of any famous archer character you can think of.”
Releasing her hand, he followed her over to the bar. “Only if you’ll have one with me,” he replied in regards to the drink offer. He was more of a social drinker, and when he did drink alone... well, it wasn’t usually a pretty sight, so he made sure he was really alone.

Pepper smiled and shook the man's hand, making sure to keep her grip firm. "It's a pleasure to meet you as well, Mr. Barton." After she shook his hand, she pulled hers from his grip gently. "So you're the archer he has spoken of. He says you never miss you mark. Is that true?"
Pausing near the bar, she reached for a couple of glasses. "Of course I will. What would you like?" She tossed a few olives into her glass then poured alcohol into it. She, too, was a social drinker and this counted for social time, so she was going to have a drink. It would help loosen them both up a bit.
"I don't think it should be too long before Tony arrives. I'm sure he has a lot to discuss with you." She didn't know what Tony had worked on for him, only what Clint had mentioned.
