Natasha Romanoff was born as Natalia Romanova in the city of Volgograd in Russia. She was born in the midst of the Cold War, where people were living in a constant state of fear and terror. Her neighbourhood was one of the casualties of this fear, an attack causing a fast spreading fire which took the lives of her parents. She was found by Ivan Petrovich - to the public eye he was a soldier, someone who wanted to help in the aftermath of the disaster, but in truth he was a recruiting officer for an agency. He took her with him to the base of the Black Widow project, a program that recruited children and turned them into cold-blooded killers and super assassins.

She was taken to Department X, where Natalia found herself subject to intense combat and espionage training at the Red Room Facility. She found herself being brainwashed and excelling at everything the facility threw at her, growing up believing that she was a former ballerina - the memories being planted into her mind to ensure she remained loyal to the program. The scientists in the Red Room Facility experimented too. Natalia's body was improved both biotechnologically and psycho-technologically; granting her slowed ageing, an enhanced immune system and an abnormally increased athleticism. Her training continued and her hand-to-hand-combat and weapon skills were among the best of the 'students' who were going through the same program as herself. The psychological meddling that the Red Room had inflicted, however, left her scarred even to the present day.

She took orders silently and followed them exactly, never questioning anything she was told. The guilt that she felt after every kill gradually grew less and less until she was an empty shell of a person, nothing but a relentless and ruthless killing machine. The brainwashing left her utterly emotionless but she found herself falling for a Soviet test pilot called Alexei Shostakov, who the KGB married her off to. Their married life was short lived, though, as Natalia was told that Alexei had died. He was actually trained as another agent, wanted for another purpose by the KGB.

It was a few months after Alexei's 'death' that Natalia found herself doubting the memories she had. She sat in her room, thinking and rethinking all of the things she could remember. The memories in her head were those of a ballerina going through ruthless training, and while she knew she had the ability to do the moves that the graceful image of herself was doing, when she attempted to do them herself she found she couldn't replicate them. The next day, she found herself doubting everything the facility was telling her. She wasn't such a trusting fool anymore. Despite her doubts, she was given the title of the Black Widow. It was the highest position a 'student' at the facility could have and there was only one at a time. Until Natalia was killed, there wouldn't be another Black Widow. She was just another in a long line of super assassins, highly skilled yet easily replaced. Despite this, Natalia was becoming more like a human, emotions and even a conscience were starting to form. She also knew that she wanted out of the program. She never wanted to see the Red Room or feel the cold sensation of being brainwashed and the crippling pain that followed it again. That part of her life was over.

Just after her nineteenth birthday, Black Widow was sent to infiltrate and retrieve sensitive information for Ivan. Unfortunately, S.H.I.E.L.D also wanted the information and they had sent Hawkeye to get it. Natalia had already killed those who had the files and satisfied with her cleanly carried out job, she bent down to pick the files up from where they had fallen to the floor. Before she could straighten up, she found herself on the other end of an extremely sharp arrow. She closed her eyes quickly and had hoped he would just kill her quickly, but death never came. Instead, she was given an ultimatum: return to S.H.I.E.L.D or be shot through the heart. She chose to go with Hawkeye and was taken to the base, unsure whether she was a prisoner or welcomed.

She wasn't treated as a prisoner, but she refused to trust anyone on board the helicarrier. For all she knew she was being tricked by the Red Room Facility to be brainwashed again. The brainwashing she was waiting for never came though. A few weeks after her arrival on the base, Nick Fury offered her a new life as a S.H.E.I.L.D agent. Natalia Romanova would be no more, she would have no ties to Russia or the government that had turned her into the Black Widow. Natalia refused to show weakness in front of anyone, so without making her lack of trust and wariness known, she became Natasha Romanoff. Natalia was dead and buried, never to return. She was assigned as Agent Barton's partner and the two became an unstoppable assassin duo, the best S.H.I.E.L.D had ever had.

He is the only person she would say she trusts completely. To everyone else she is a heartless killer, yet to him she's something else. She's human. He sees every side of her and she's trying to open herself to him as much as she can. For the Black Widow to trust anyone like she trusts Clint Barton is a miracle. He's her best friend, her work partner... and maybe something more? He's brought out emotions she can't remember having ever felt, so she's still getting to grips with this thing that people call love.

Now a part of the Avengers, she's staying in the Avengers Tower - formerly the Stark Tower. She has her own room but she never uses it, she is usually found in Clint's. The rest of the Avengers don't know how to take their relationship and Natasha isn't letting on anything, as she doesn't quite know what's going on either. For now she's just adjusting to being a part of a team, having to place what little trust she has in the other Avengers, while trying to keep the world safe from the new threats that are rising.
